THE ARABIAN NIGHTS” IN TAIWAN

According to Theater Times, an interesting theater has recently been staged in Taiwan. "Arabian Nights" is the name of the theater currently being performed by Pu Shen lu. Lu adapted his work from the play and performance of the same name by the American director and writer Mary Zimmerman.

In her play, Zimmerman used the same old story of One Thousand and One Nights. Shahrazad is a storyteller who tells stories to the king every night. But in order to modernize her work, Zimmerman has given Shahrazad's stories a touch of contemporary politics. Shahrazad tells Sultan about the endless wars in the Middle East, and the sound of tanks and bullets are heard during the performance. In this artistic creation, she criticized her hometown.

But Lu has taken a different approach. In order to make his work more attractive, he has been able to distance himself from the eastern elements, which are considered to be the foundations of the work, to present himself more in the West. Although Lou created an eye-catching scene with the help of his assistants, it discredited his performance, contrary to the political trend of the show. In a way that neither could present an American show nor was able to achieve the Eastern principles.
